La Mariana captured their third consecutive title of the Municipalidad del Pilar Cup, following their 9-8 win over Alegria on Argentine Polo Association grounds in Pilar.
It was a very special final, not only because La Mariana captured the title for the third year in a row, but also because Pite Merlos, the only team member to play all three finals, had the pleasure of winning one of the season’s most important tournaments with his son, Juan Cruz. Three generations of the Merlos family were in Pilar today; the legendary Cacho Merlos, former member of Santa Ana, presented the trophy.
The match was very close and hard fought in the first half – both teams won a chukker apiece. The third ended up tied at 5-all. La Mariana (with Nachi Heguy filling in for the injured Sebastián Merlos) battled back in the fourth period to take a 8-6 lead.
Alegria managed to hold La Mariana scoreless in the fifth chukker; Fred Mannix scored for Alegria to cut the margin to one goal (7-8), with only one chukker remaining. La Mariana managed to score twice in the last seven minutes of play, sealing their victory and claiming their third consecutive title in Pilar.
La Mariana María Pía: 2-1, 4-5, 5-5, 8-6, 8-7, 9-8
