Deauville is one of the most renown equestrian cities in France: races, sales, showjumping, dressage and polo form a rich agenda throughout the year. But Deauville is above all a seaside resort; in this spirit, Deauville International Polo Club has renewed the prestigious Gold Cup.
The 67th edition of the Barriere Deauville Polo Cup will be played from August 1 – 27, together with celebrations of the 110th anniversary of the Deauville Polo Club, founded in 1907.
It’s really in 1950 that Francois André and the polo club started the Gold Cup; a tournament that all the great players and patrons of this sport love to win. All legendary champions have travelled to Deauville to win: Adolfo Cambiaso, the Heguy and Pieres families, as well as the Merlos’ and Gracidas.
This 2017 will be no exception to the tradition, as the different teams feature four big frontmen, such as Argentina 9-goaler Sapo Caset, Fran Elizade, Tito Ruiz Guiñazu and Pancho Bensadon, who will play with his sixteen year old son Rufino.
Twenty-two teams!
Under the presidency of Jean-Edouard Mazery, whose team take unique care for conviviality, without neglecting the sporting quality of the event, the reputation of Deauville International Polo Club has grown beyond national borders.
Other main sporting events will be present at Deauville International Polo Club: the Ladies Cup (August 9 – 12), and the Bronze Cup (8 goals, August 14 – 25). At least 22 teams are expected in Deauville this summer: Four in the Silver Cup, six in the Gold Cup, four – six in the Ladies Cup and eight in the Bronze Cup. Some encounters will be played on the beautiful and improved fields of Dozulé. There are also three beach polo matches scheduled.
With the aim of getting closer to the visitors, there will be two team parades on the streets of Deauville, on August 12, day of the Deauville Ladies Polo Cup final and August 26, the day before the the end of the Gold Cup.
