The Westchester Cup
On Sunday 28 April, Flannels England came up against the United States ofAmerica to compete for the iconic Westchester Cup at the International Polo Club, Palm Beach, Florida. Following an England win in 2018 at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, an invitation was issued by the United States Polo Association for a 2019 rematch, with the USA keen to recover the coveted trophy, following a 31 year victory hiatus.
The teams were evenly matched, with one last minute change to the Flannels England side ahead of the match, which saw Tommy Beresford step in following an injury to England stalwart and long time Captain, James Beim. It seems the polo gods were on the USA’s side however yesterday, as, despite fast and ferocious play from both sides, which saw the scores at an even 8-8 in the final chukka, in extra time, a golden goal from Geronimo Obregon secured the match 9-8.
Flannels England team coach Will Lucas said after the match, “The boys played really well. They came back a three goal deficit in the fifth chukka and had chances to win, but it just wasn’t their day. They were really disappointed, having played so well away, but they can rest assured it was an amazing game.” England stalwart Ollie Cudmore commented, “Obviously, we’re very disappointed, but it was really fun and a great opportunity to play with such a young team. Overall it was a successful trip despite the loss, but there are always more chances in the future.”
Thousands of spectators had gathered for this exciting match, which showcased a real example of great international polo.
