Polo, the oldest team sport in the world, is taking off again with beach polo in the Baltic resort of Sellin. For one year, the beach polo tournament on the Baltic Sea beach had to take a break due to Corona. This year, eight international teams of players will turn the beach at the pier into a hot spot of the polo scene for three days.
Top players such as the four-time German beach polo champion Patrick Maleitzke, the captain of the German national polo team Christopher Kirsch, the national player Sven Schneider and Argentinean polo professionals have announced their participation.
The matches of the German Beach Polo Championship officially start on Friday at 13:00. There will be four matches per day, each consisting of three chukkas. A chukka is five minutes until the first bell, plus another 30 seconds. These rules are designed for the protection, safety and welfare of horse and rider.
“The Voice of Polo”, Jan Erik Franck, moderates all the matches in an expertly entertaining manner, turning those previously only interested in polo into true polo fans.
The event area is open daily from 11:30 a.m., directly at the Sellin pier. Admission for visitors is free on all days.
Corona Rules
In the event area of the erected tent landscape and on the terrace facing the playing field, the 3G rule applies for visitors. For the open beach area around the pitch and on the pier as well as on the stairs to the pier and on Wilhelmstraße, there are no Corona-related rules and restrictions for visitors.
VIP tickets and public area
Visitors can watch the matches directly from the terrace at the polo area of the tent-landscape on the beach and book a VIP ticket for 95.00 Euro per person/day. This includes food, drinks and reserved seats. Here you can meet the players, team sponsors and one or two celebrities. These tickets are limited; pre-registration is required.
Alternatively, the public area in the tent-landscape can be visited – without admission.
On Saturday evening, the “2G Players Party” will take place. Participation is possible with pre-registration.
