Army polo team win Rundle Cup as horses battle sweltering heat in Tidworth

The British Army have won the 2025 Rundle Cup after trouncing their Navy rivals in difficult heat in Tidworth.

A 5-1 1/2 win for the men in red saw them win back the trophy that they lost to the Navy last year.

A week ago, the RAF sealed the Inter Services title after beating the Army for the Sassoon Cup.

After a display from the Royal Navy Raiders and a musical performance from the Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines, the action got underway between the Army and Navy.

The Navy had a 1/2 goal handicap advantage, meaning the game couldn’t end in a draw, but the Army scored first through William Cecil in the first chukka.

Steve Worsley replied for the Navy in the second chukka, but it was in the third and fourth chukkas that the Army sealed the win with four more goals.

There were concerns in the 34°C heat that it would be too difficult for the horses, but each chukka was split in half, meaning the animals were running for a maximum of three-and-a-half minutes before being changed.
