Team Foxcote beat Team CPPC 5 – 4 to take the Jerudong Trophy for 2017 in a great game and a fabulous day in memory of The Hon Mark Vestey. Off the field thousands were raised for HRH The Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry’s chosen charities. Centre Point, Walking With the Wounded and The Household Cavalry Foundation were the beneficiary charities this year.
On the field, the yellow and red colours of the Foxcote team got off to a strong start, running end to end in the first chukka and clocking up an impressive 3 – 0 lead at the end of the first. HRH Prince Harry opened the scoring and was playing very well from the outset. The advantage of familiarity certainly seemed to help the Foxcote team off to a flying start, with husband and wife team John Paul and Nina Clarkin and brothers HRH The Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry clearly reading each other well and making a connection that was alluding the CPPC team in the first half. Nina almost made it 4 – 0 at the end of the first chukka but the ball went just wide of the right hand post as the hooter sounded to end the chukka.
HRH Prince Harry continued Foxcote’s scoring streak at the beginning of the second chukka when he took full advantage of a mishit ball from Simon Keyte, turning quickly, swooping on to the ball and running it all the way to goal from the half way to make it 4 – 0. Soon after Satnam Dhillon didn’t quite have the time he thought to get away with the ball from HRH Prince Harry and a foul was awarded. John Paul Clarkin converted the penalty and it looked like a Foxcote victory was certainly a safe bet as they sat with a comfortable 5 – 0 lead at half time.
The Cirencester team however clearly had a constructive re-group at half time as they came out in the third chukka a much more cohesive team. The bad luck in finding the posts, which had plagued them in the first half also seemed to be behind them and they waged an impressive comeback. Simon Keyte was the first to break the spell and open the account on the CPPC side of the scoreboard, with Satnam following suit, leaving it 5 – 3 and all to play for going in to the last chukka.
CPPC crept a little closer still but Foxcote, with huge red and yellow support from the sidelines, were able to hold onto their first half lead, to win 5 – 4.
