Next Weekend: Gay Polo League Joins the Victory Cup Fall Classic
|Next weekend, the Gay Polo League (GPL) will make the journey to Governors Island, just 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, to compete Saturday, Sept. 23 in the signature BMW Victory Cup Fall Classic Polo Match.
The GPL team, comprised of Chip McKenney, Phil Tremo, Severance MacLaughlin and Brandon Van Loon, will battle a number of other high-caliber teams in hopes of claiming the victory during one of the most exciting and festive social events of the year below the iconic Manhattan skyline.
Chip is the CEO/CFO of Phelps Media Group International, the leading sports media agency with a primary focus on national and international equestrian sports. Prior to joining Phelps Media, Chip worked in the entertainment and sports branding space for television in Los Angeles. He is a lifelong horseman. He has been playing polo for ten years and currently has a USPA rating of 0. Prior to playing polo, Chip enjoyed a successful career competing as an amateur in showjumping on the A circuit. Chip is the Founder & President of the Gay Polo League – the only LGBTQ polo league in the world.
Brandon Van Loon
A native of Ithaca, New York, Branden represented Cornell on the polo field for middle school, high school, and college where he obtained a bachelors degree in public policy. After graduating, he has had the opportunity to work in many facets of the polo industry, from club management, to green horse training, playing professionally, as well as becoming a Certified Polo Instructor with the USPA. His status as a member of the Team USPA program has allowed him to work with several of polo’s greats, including Julio Arellano, Owen Rinehart, and Adam Snow.
Phil has been playing polo for six years in both Florida and Washington, and recently played on a trip to Argentina – the polo mecca of the world. In addition to polo, he enjoys foxhunting. He and his partner, Anthony, enjoy classic cars and drive them on tours across the US.
Severence “Sev” MacLaughlin has played polo on and off for about twenty years and has had the opportunity to play all over the world. He began at the Cornell University Men’s Polo team as a varsity player and currently serves as the Chairman of the Cornell University Polo Alumni Board. Severence is the Master Data Scientist and AVP for Healthcare & Life Sciences for Cognizant Technology Services.
