The Thoroughbred Makeover features competition in ten disciplines for recently-retired Thoroughbreds in their first year of retraining for a second career after racing. Disciplines include barrel racing, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunters, freestyle, polo, show hunter, show jumper and ranch work. Horses and trainers will compete for more than $125,000 in total prize money at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 7-10, 2020.

With the Thoroughbred’s natural suitability to the sport of polo, polo players and trainers have enjoyed great success at past Thoroughbred Makeovers. In 2017, polo horse Old Tavern, trained by Charlie Caldwell, won the overall title of Thoroughbred Makeover Champion.

The Makeover is open to professionals, amateurs, juniors (ages 12 and older) and teams. Approved trainers may acquire an eligible Thoroughbred through whatever source they choose. For full eligibility and competition rules, please review the 2020 rulebook. Learn more at

Don’t forget about the Thoroughbred Makeover waitlist! If you were on the fence about participating in the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover, missed the application period or have already been accepted and would like to add a second horse, you can apply to join the waitlist.

As tracks close due to COVID-19 and many racehorses are facing an unexpected retirement, the Retired Racehorse Project wanted to open the opportunity to participate in the Makeover process and help as many horses find homes and solid second career foundations as possible.
