Five of the nation’s best girls polo clubs were scheduled to converge in Houston, Texas, to compete in this year’s USPA Girls’ National Interscholastic Polo Championship on March 19. The event, however, was canceled amid the concerns of coronavirus (COVID-19).

For the second year in a row, the Northeastern Region was to be represented by the Boston Polo Club out of Georgetown, Mass. For Newton North freshman Julia Schaefer, this was to be her second trip to the National Championships where she was set to be joined by teammates Ariadne Dogani (Dana Hall School, Wellesley), Brynn Roberts (Exeter (N.H.) High School) and Emerson Bruce (Waldorf School, Lexington).

Coached by Mark Tashjian and Emerson Bilodeau, Boston won the USPA Interscholastic Girls Northeast Regional Tournament by defeating Newport Polo, 17-14, in the semifinals and Gardnertown Polo, 18-14, in the finals, with Schaefer being named an all-star for the five-team regional tournament.

The teams that were set to be joining Boston in Houston were defending champion Maryland Varsity (Freeland, MD), Houston Polo (Houston, TX), Aiken Youth Polo (Aiken, SC) and Maui Polo (Maui, HI).
